Aya's Soul Cutter stayed the same but a soft, dark coat seemed to envelope her.
"While I was in that world of yours. I wasn't really able to use Shadow Walker as she should be used because there are no shadows there at all. It's actually quite scary for someone like me to have to fight in that position. Anyway, for 1000 years I have not used this technique but I still think I can manage, especially at this time of day," Aya said. "Do you know the power of my Bankai, Sayuri?"
"No," she said, "You rarely used it. I was almost sure that you didn't have one."
"Well my Bankai, allows me to gather and use shadows as my weapons. Do you know why I said that this would be the best time of day for me to use it?"
Sayuri looked around and frowned as she realized where the sun was.
"Do you know why I can fight so well without my Soul Cutter? It's because, as I was growing up my family was worried about this great weakness is my Soul Cutter. It was that if I fought someone on a flat plain or right at mid-day when the sun is directly above everything, I would not be able to fight at all, so I trained for this eventuality to come along and I avoided having to fight at that time," Aya explained. "Contrary to that, is that at times like these, when shadows stretch across the ground, I am very powerful. You should have attacked me at noon, child, especially since you knew the power of my Soul Cutter."
Sayuri's eyes widened as Aya drew the shadows towards her so that they writhed and churned around her body like dark flames. Aya sent the shadows flying at Sayuri, who was just able to dodge them on time to not get hit. Time and time again, Aya sent the shadows flying at Sayuri, who dodged them each time but was unable to attack.
At the same time...
Soi Fon and Yoruichi searched together for the other Sayuri with little luck. Suddenly, behind them, they heard shouts and screams and they changed course to go in that direction. There, they found hundreds of Hollows flowing out of a hole in the sky.
"That looks like the hole that Aya came out of," Yoruichi said. "The girl must be nearby. Let's find her."
"Yes, Lady Yoruichi," Soi Fon replied, following her. They checked all the nearby houses. It was a long while before they were able to detect a faint trace of Spirit Energy, which was all the small girl had left in her. They walked into the house and saw her lying on the floor, blood flowing steadily from her wound.
"You want to finish me off?" Sayuri asked.
"No, we just want you to stop those Hollows from attacking. Please close that portal of yours," Yoruichi said.
"No, I'm going to die anyway so I may as well leave this for you to remember me by. Otherwise, I'll just become another one of your enemies. I want you to remember me as the relentless one who would not give up, even after she died."
"Your sister has abandoned you. She left you here bleeding and took your Spirit Energy. Why must you keep doing this?" Soi Fon asked.
"Our only goal is to kill all the Shihouin. If she needed me to die and she needed my Spirit Energy for that to happen, then that's fine by me but I will make a great mess before I go." Sayuri said. "I trust my sister with everything. We agreed that if one of us got wounded, not to give up."
Yoruichi and Soi Fon glanced at each other in pain and sorrow. It would not have been easy to make that choice for either of them.
"How about we heal you, if you close that portal thing up there? If you cooperate with us we will take care of you," Yoruichi said.
"That's a bluff and anyway, I already told you that I was not going to do that because I will end this here and now. Please let me die in peace, I don't want my enemy's face to be the last thing I see. I trust my sister to finish everything and that is enough for me to be willing to give up my life. Now you two should probably go help deal with those Hollows," Sayuri said, closing her eyes.
Yoruichi a Soi Fon watched her and then walked out of the room. Above them, they saw the portal slowly close and then vanish from sight. They dashed off to help destroy the Hollows.
